This square 20 x 20 cm reclaimed wood picture frame for picture format B: 20 x 20 cm was made from recycled wooden mouldings. Each wooden moulding used for a Basic Luna Designs picture frame tells its own story. It may have been a door or window frame in its former life or travelled the world as part of a ship's deck. Luna Designs reclaimed wood picture frames are made by hand in South Africa.
The main suppliers of the reclaimed wood are historic building material yards and homeless people in Cape Town, who sell their finds to Luna Designs at a profit.
The purchased waste wood is transported to the Luna Farm in the Karoo semi-desert, where the climate is extremely dry and hot and the recycled wood can dry for around two years under the African sun. They are first searched for any nails or screws with the help of a metal detector in order to protect the saw blades during the production of the picture frames.
Once the 20 x 20 cm reclaimed wood picture frame has been produced, it is given a gentle layer of beeswax, a 3mm thick glass pane, an exchangeable black and white photo and a back panel made of strong cardboard, which is held in place by flexible tabs.
